"A top up degree is no substitute for a bachelor degree"

Main Post:

"A top up degree is no substitute for a bachelor degree because employers expect that level of education"

I read this in an article from the South China Morning Post a couple of days ago. Is that really the case? I intend to start an online HND in Business and Marketing this September and top it up to a Bachelor's degree after that (I would like to work as a market analyst or in consumer insights), but now I have some doubts... I thought employers gave it basically the same value as a regular Bachelor's degree?

Is the SCMP talking about the UK jobs market? Learning as you earn is perfectly respectable in the UK but as with any degree there are better and worse options.

Top Comment: I think it really depends what field you’re going to go into. The sad reality is there are many employers that are snooty and sneer at anyone that didn’t do the traditional “GCSE > A-Level > RG 2:1” route but attitudes are changing and I’d reckon they are an increasing minority in most fields. I think it would really depend exactly what field you want to go into and you’d be better off finding answers by talking to people working in those fields rather than on a university subreddit. Anecdotally I studied law, a profession that notoriously has a reputation for only hiring top RG/Oxbridge firsts yet was able to secure many competitive offers despite not coming from that background myself. When I was at interviews and talking to HR people I found the vast majority of them cared far more about my extracurriculars and work experience than they did about my degree which seemed mostly a box ticking thing to them. Your mileage might vary but that’s been my experience.

[UPX] How and why did you choose your degree program?

Main Post:

Hello, just a lost freshie here that doesn't like their degree program. I think I was just brainwashed to think that the only profitable course were Engineering, law, or med. Because of that I didn't really explore other interests and chose electrical engineering . But after experiencing everything that UP has shown me for my first year, the thought of being married to my degree program for the next 4 or more years of my life demises me.

Currently, Im planning to shift to either BS IE or BS Geography. IE because , though still Engineering, I like management and operations. Geography because Im interested in how humanities can be integrated with hard sciences. Other than that, im still open for other options. With that being said, im kind of in interested in why and how others chose their degree programs. For inspiration and advise nalang din hehe. Thanks!

Top Comment: BS Psych - got college credits in high school (worked with forensics and first-aid medics) except this one, thought I could Pokemon courses catching em all so I just went with it. Nakailang wedding na ako from the batch. BA Film - first course I wanted to shift to; wanted an excuse to watch movies all the time. Did not get in because galing akong States and no knowledge of local film/art at the time (which is taken very seriously sa CMC). Still have and make-use of all my media-related skills (radio talk, video/music & video editing, digital art, etc.) BA Philo - second choice - the course I was avoiding since alam kong dito ako patungo eventually and didn't want to be predictable; I fit in like a glove (having an opinion, articulating it systematically, and presenting that to others is what I've been doing ever since .) MA Linguistics - wanted to take my languaging outside the Philippines and leave for good. Chose Japan because Japanese minor ko sa Philo. Got in riding on my skills from the above. Thesis ko blended all of the above and then some more. PhD Education - wanted to get more skills to be a better teacher. Was great at it. Left kasi mabigat kaklase ko. PhD Media - Continuation of what I was doing in my MA. But decided to check if there were any serious people left in UP because of prior PhD experience. Hard rule ko na I was set on not continuing an education in the Philippines if I found the people around me were not up to my standards. Thankfully, I found a group of people that it is my continuing honor to work with (though even that I expect to end in a bit). So why did I lay out 14 years of discipline switches at this point (without even having the space to cover all the disciplines I've dipped myself into not mentioned if we're just looking at my course history)? Because if you're choosing an output-based field, it literally doesn't matter what course you pick compared to i) what skills you take from it and develop, and ii) how you forge those skills into your own personal thing you can keep relying on. What does that translate to in my case: Financially - I am about to close a multi-million peso deal, just one of many I am hatching (and in a position to realize). Impact-wise - I already have, and am still being commissioned to write national laws for this country as a natural consequence of my job. Travel - paid to be all over the world. Lastly, consider: College is just 4 years of, supposing aabot ka ng 65, of 40-45 years of the rest of a working career, trust na hindi siya as decision-locking as it may seem right now* (if output-based field ka). The title is not as consequential as the skills and perspectives you hone. If you're considering social sciences and/or art and humanities, inter-/multi-disciplinary was predicted to be the eventual nature of work in the 80s (magsesenior na yung idea, let me hard emphasize). Part of the reason it's so easy for me to shine and not worry about where I end up, regardless if I switch to a field I have background experience or not, is just by following that idea. I can easily negotiate a lot because people know I bring a lot to the table. It literally isn't rocket science. Most work in this country will be exploit level (50k a month is chump change as compared to minimum wage in other countries. Most will expect you to smile and be grateful at 18k or something kasi 'no experience' ka). Is just rushing towards a job really what you want to do? If you're looking to be a field-changer (the comment about integrating hard science and humanities) your best bet is to think about a sub-field within a field. But ask yourself if its possible in the Philippines (in one of the posts I linked above, the sample I have was the field of Neurolinguistics (where I literally had free unli-access to MRI machines and the medical college, as a linguistics student, to conduct brain scans on people) - could not do that at all here kasi wala namang MRI machine ang UPD Ling.

Master's Degree in UPD worth it?

Main Post:

To those pursuing a master's degree while working, is it worth it? How many years does it usually take to finish a degree part-time?

I have recently been accepted in two master's programs in UPD, Artificial Intelligence and Electrical Engineering, but I have deferred for a semester to have some time to decide whether I should continue or not. My senior advised me to apply abroad instead (e.g., Erasmus Mundus, KAIST), but that means I would be missing out on at least two years of work experience. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks! :)

Top Comment: The Erasmus Mundus, KAIST, and Chevening programs are far more prestigious than any scholarship in the entire Philippines. Just the fact that you graduated from a top-100 uni will carry you far enough. “Master’s Degrees don’t matter in the industry anyway! Just go wherever you want” - if the company you’re applying for downplays the master’s degree, they are not worth working for.

May mga alam ba kayong defunct programs sa UP? What's their story?

Main Post:

Really curious to know yung mga degree programs that UP no longer offers. A few defunct degprog that I know are:

  1. BS Nuclear Engineering (UPD)
  2. BS Botany (UPD)
  3. BA Spanish (UPD)

It's weird tbh na wala akong makitang mga info sa kanila sa internet or prolly because super tagal na nilang tinanggal

Need Advice: Top Course Choices for UP Diliman and Los Baños Campuses

Main Post:

What do you think about my top course choices for each campus? I can't decide on a different course as these are my top choices, so I chose the same courses for UP Diliman and Los Baños. Only the order of the courses differed, but I'm not sure why I changed the order of my top choices.
